Yeah, my main issue with granting push access is that I simply like the "pull" model, like how Linus builds up the official Linux Kernel tree by pulling in from other clones. At least, that's how I understand it.

I've since moved to using gitosis to manage git repositories, and that uses a shared shell account and some amazingness to securely grant push access to repositories. good stuff.

Dear Mr. Spiros,
I just looked up transclusion and I'm with you on that concept.
I feel my independent thought on the importance of "transclusion" (under a different terminology) is validated somewhat. I'll have to see how naive and or wrong I am about how the extent to which it can be of benefit in a file system.
I am thinking it might go a long way towards reducing duplpication in atypical, large office environment where everyone tweaks a "sample" minutely but, perforce of the current os, saves the whole document.
Regards,
Oldetar

Dear Mr. Spiros,
Please excuse my psuedonymnity.
I just want to let you know that I found your site with search terms "directories" and "hierarchies" and I will be trying to follow your exposition of Haven.
I have similar reflections as you do about existing file management in os's.
I think you have more IT expertise than I but I can offer comments from a "near- power" user perspective and many years of struggling with large numbers fo files in shared environments.
I hope you've had a chance to expand your thoughts.
I have bookmarked this page and will look for the exposition at the links you provide.
Regards,
 Oldetar

Dean,

The design described is the result of a series of different prototypes that I've been working on over the years. So, actually, a prototype matching the description does not yet exist, as I wanted to get my conclusions down so that I'd have something to reference as I started working on this (hopefully final) prototype.

I've been on the fence as to if I should fork or patch CouchDB to do what I want, or just start from scratch. I'm leaning towards the latter. The only component from CouchDB that would really be useful is its data storage mechanism and view logic. And, as I'm only a beginner with Erlang, I could get this done much faster with C.

I do plan on making everything described open source, as such a system would certainly need adoption to really fulfill its potential. As soon as I get some code together worth posting, up it goes. I've just been busy this month as I'm starting a new day job. Stay tuned, and I would certainly welcome any ideas that you have that I'm missing or not addressing in my posts.

From the first paragraph it sounds like you've started prototyping -- is this the case? Is the code out in the open somewhere? Do you have an idea of what you plan on implementing in? Again from the wording on the first paragraph is sounds like CouchDB.

This is a problem I've also spent quite a few hours ruminating on -- I really like where you're going with it. I'd love to take a look if you plan on putting the code out in the open.
